After a rocky start, I made it to the facility I was assigned. I was able to meet with my direct report and began the process of introducing myself. I then got the paperwork out of the way, filled out some information for their records and took my paperwork back to head office for processing. Since they were not expecting me I had to figure out ways to be useful while I was waiting to be assigned tasks. So I decided to update all the desktops and laptops in use. Good think I did most have not been updated in over a year. Each PC was taking more than a day to get all the updates so I have a feeling it is gonna take me some time to complete.
Week One
Don’t expect there to be much high-level technical working getting conducted both parties get used to each other. For now, I am preparing devices for re-issue. I am also gathering information about hardware, infrastructure available at the school and relevant accounts to administer these systems and devices. I am liaising with my District Coordinator daily with questions (not sure if fed up of the barrage as yet). I am reading over procedure and policy set out by ICT. My main time filler for now is just updating the OS on devices returned so to prepare for re-issue.
Top Line Observations
- There are about 3 independent wired networks and 4 overlapping SSIDs for same wireless networks.
- OS used by staff seems to be running Windows 7
- Computers are at least 5-10 years old technology
- There is a sever that doesn’t seem to be serving any services or have any devices connected to its network
- There have not been any ICT personnel for a bit over a year.
We are gonna have start fixing some of those things shortly.
Seems like I have found the perfect situation to learn and grown in my ICT career. I hope to make my mark improving the ICT infrastructure while I’m here. Next week I expect that I will speak to person that I will be interfacing with day to day. I look forward to what’s to come.
