Theory Meets Practicality

Meeting the Contractor

As this I am taking up an old project I had limited conversations with the contactor working on the project thus far. This changed this week. I met with the project team and we started talking in more detail about the project outside of the basic project documents. I showed them my wiring plan and this is where I learned the wiring for all the access points had already been run and terminated. So my plans went out the window. I learned a valuable lesson about getting ahead of myself.

Major takeaways after the meeting

  • all if not most of the cabling is completed
    • modifications to the cabling now will unnecessarily increase price
  • addition of 2 network rack need to added to design for the 2 locations where the network switches are to be installed
  • original design had two 48 port switches
    • new design changes this to four 24 port switches to protect against equipment failure
  • a router was added to design to hand failover and firewall duties
  • patch panels for cable where added to design for easier troubleshooting and expansion
  • because there was more than switch they advised getting power distribution unit for each rack.

Next steps to get updated quotes and await approval from my superiors for inevitable price increases.
